On May 18th at approximately 5:45 p.m. Hamden Police responded to the Quinnipiac University library on the report of a bomb threat. An estimated 5,000 people were seated in the “quad area” awaiting the graduation ceremony for 425 undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. The library is in close proximity to the quad area.

Hamden Police with the assistance of Quinnipiac University Public Safety conducted a thorough search of the library which yielded negative results. During the search, Quinnipiac University received a second bomb threat. The Quinnipiac University administrative staff made a decision to relocate the graduation ceremony to its York Hill Campus, located at 305 Sherman Avenue.

Investigation revealed that at approximately 5:38 p.m. a female caller contacted Quinnipiac University Public Safety and stated, “Bomb in the library.” Approximately 17 minutes thereafter, the female caller again contacted Quinnipiac University Public Safety and stated, “Several bombs are on campus. You haven’t cleared out graduation. That’s not a good idea.”

Hamden Police and Quinnipiac University Public Safety were able to identify the telephone number in which the call originated. University records indicated that the telephone number was former student Danielle Shea’s number. Shortly thereafter, Hamden Police located Shea inside of the TD Bank Sports Complex. She was dressed in a cap and gown. After further investigation, Shea was arrested and transported to Hamden Police Headquarters.

Hamden Police Detectives obtained a detailed confession from Shea. Police learned that she did not attend Quinnipiac University this year. When graduation day arrived, Shea, who had earlier purchased a cap and gown, panicked when her relatives did not see her name on the graduation roster. She then stated that she made the bomb threats, in an attempt to have the graduation cancelled.

 Examples of a mortar rounds...

On April 4th at approximately 12:20p.m. the Hamden Police Department Communications Center received a telephone call from a 79 year-old Vantage Road resident who stated that he had found a “bullet” in his home and wanted to know how to dispose of it. The resident was advised that he could transport the “bullet” to police headquarters or an officer would retrieve it at his residence.

A half-hour thereafter, the resident entered the lobby of police headquarters carrying a large mortar round, which was wrapped in a plastic bag. Sergeant John Riordan quickly removed the mortar from the building.

The Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad was summoned and determined that the projectile was safe. The area surrounding Dixwell Avenue and Whitney Avenue was shut down for nearly an hour. In addition, the Hamden Police Department was evacuated.

Officers learned that the resident found the mortar in the joists between the first and second floor. He advised police that he has resided in his Vantage Road home for 52 years and that he had “no idea” as to how the projectile got into his basement.

Hamden Police would like to advise residents, that if they should locate a mortar or artillery projectile in their home or garage, to promptly evacuate their residence. Furthermore, residents should not touch the item. The Hamden Police Department should be contacted immediately.
