AVAILABLE EXEMPTIONS & REQUIREMENTS

NOTE:  All exemptions are deducted from the Gross Assessment

VETERANS:
      Discharge, current orders or affidavit confirming active duty status must be recorded in Town Clerk’s Office by October 1.
      Disabled Veteran’s amount of exemption is based on percent of disability.
      Exemption is maintained for widows/widowers.

STATE EXEMPTION (VETERANS) :
      
Discharge, current orders or affidavit confirming active duty status must be recorded in Town Clerk’s Office. 
      *Income Requirement
      Filing period: February 1 – September 30. 
      Application filed biennially. 
      Exemption is maintained for widows/widowers.  

 STATE EXEMPTION (VETERANS):
      Exemption equal to the amount of assessment on one motor vehicle owned by or held in trust for an active duty service person.

     Application must be completed [including signature of Commanding Officer] by Dec. 31st of the year that taxes are due

LOCAL EXEMPTION (VETERANS) :
      
Discharge, current orders or affidavit confirming active duty status must be recorded in Town Clerk’s Office.
      Income Requirement – the income limits have been expanded for the local option program which will allow more
      veterans to be eligible and the exemption has been increased as shown:

Single, under $29,800                       exemption is now $10,000    

Married, under $36,500                     exemption is now $10,000

And

Single, between $29, 800 & $54,800            exemption is now $4,000

Married, between $36,500 & $61,500           exemption is now $4,000

     Filing period: February 1 – October 1.
       Application filed biennially at the same time as the state application

Exemption is maintained for widows/widowers.

LOCAL EXEMPTION FOR SPECIALLY EQUIPPED VEHICLE:  
    Amount of exemption  = 100% of assessed vehicle value. 
    Filing period: February 1 – November 1. 
    Application filed annually. 
    Vehicle inspection made by Assessor or medical documentation must be provided.
    If disabled veteran discharge must be recorded in Town Clerk's Office by October 1.

TOTALLY DISABLED EXEMPTION:
    Applicant must submit proof of being 100% totally and permanently disabled.
    Amount of exemption = $1,000.
    Deadline for filing is January 31.
    No age limit or income qualification.
    One time application, exemption ends at time of death.

Note:
   Disabled persons may also qualify for Elderly Homeowners benefits.
           See requirements under Elderly Homeowner Program.
           No age requirements for disabled.

LOCAL EXEMPTION TOTALLY DISABLED :

   *Income requirement
    Amount of exemption = $1,000. 
    Filing period: February 1 – October 1. 
    Application filed annually.

BLIND EXEMPTION:
    File certificate of blindness.
    Amount of exemption = $3,000.
    Filing period: by January 31.
    One time application, exemption ends at time of death, no income limit.

LOCAL EXEMPTION (BLIND):
    *Income requirement
    Amount of exemption = $2,000. 
    Application filed annually. 
    Filing period: February 1 – October 1.

ELDERLY HOMEOWNERS PROGRAM:
    *Income requirement. Must provide Income Tax Return if filed.
     
Must be 65 years of age or over, or totally disabled. 
     
Must live in the house to which the benefit is to be applied. 
     
Benefit is determined by income amount. 
     Filing period: February 1 – May 15. 
     
Application filed biennially. 
     
Widow/widowers age 50 and over eligible to maintain benefit.

The Town also provides an additional credit annually for taxpayers who qualify for the State elderly program; no separate application is necessary.
