Enrolling in a Party
If you are registering as a new voter in Hamden, you can choose to enroll in a political party when you register to vote by checking the appropriate box on the Voter Registration Form.
If you are currently a registered voter in Hamden, you can enroll in a political party or choose to be unaffiliated (not a member of any party) at any time by filling out and returning a new Voter Registration Form, either in person or by mail.
Under state law, if you are currently enrolled in a political party, you will cease to be a member of that party as soon as your registration form is processed. You will enter a mandatory 90-day waiting period during which you cannot have rights as a member of any party. If you choose to enroll in another party immediately, or at any time during this waiting period, you cannot vote in any primary or participate in any party caucus (even if you decide to re-enroll in the same party) until the waiting period expires. This waiting period does not apply if your registration and party enrollment were in another town.
For 2008, you must switch parties by May 12 to vote in a primary August 12, if one is held.
