MINI-BUS DRIVER/DISPATCHER

PURPOSE OF CLASS:Serves as a driver for the mini-bus. Also serves as a dispatcher.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Works under the direct supervision of the Elderly Services Coordinator.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:As directed, may supervise employees of a lesser classification
GENERAL STATEMENT & EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Serves as a driver of mini-bus. Responsible for the safe and efficient daily operation of a vehicle involved in picking up and discharging elderly people at pre-scheduled locations. Following the schedule the Mini-Bus Driver will pick up senior citizens at various locations in the greater New Haven area and bring them to assigned destinations; obeys all motor vehicle laws of the State of Connecticut and observes all mandatory safety regulations for public service buses; keeps daily trip logs and such other vehicle records as may be required; keeps vehicles clean and makes a complete mechanical check daily, reporting mechanical defects or problems to the supervisor; maintains adequate gas, oil, water and anti-freeze levels for the vehicles at all times; adheres to the schedule assigned; assists all passengers on and off the vehicle; in the event of an accident, immediately notifies the supervisor and completes all required accident report forms; performs related work as required.
Serves as a Dispatcher and provides the mini-bus drivers with schedules and routes to follow in the pick up and delivery of senior citizens. Takes telephone requests from patrons for rides and instructs passengers of bus rules and regulations; uses independent judgment to plot ride request so as to most efficiently provide maximum service to bus patrons; request service and maintenance of vehicles while continuing to provide passenger service with operational vehicles; cancels service at the request of the supervisor only when totally necessary because of inclement weather or inoperative vehicles; immediately notifies supervisor of any accident; keeps such records as are required and necessary for proper operation of bus services; performs incidental clerical duties; performs related work as required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:A minimum of two- (2) years’ experience as either a bus or van driver or good driving record of ten (10) years with related experience may be substituted.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:Must possess and maintain a State of Connecticut Commercial Driver’s License with a Passenger endorsement.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the location of streets in Hamden, New Haven and specified locations in North Haven and West Haven; the ability to establish routes and time schedules for drivers from information received in telephone requests for service; the ability to maintain office records and such reporting forms as are required; the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; some knowledge of proper vehicle maintenance and repair scheduling; skill to operate basic office machines; the ability to establish harmonious and effective working relationships with supervisors, peers and the public. Thorough knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Laws of the State of Connecticut; the ability to operate a mini-bus in a safe and efficient manner; some knowledge of the basic automotive structure and operation of a vehicle so that needed repairs can be easily recognized and rectified; the ability to keep necessary daily records and to prepare accident reports in a clear and concise fashion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Must be able to load and unload a wheel chair onto and off the van ramp and properly secure. Must be able to climb up and down stairs and carry grocery bags up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Must be able to communicate effectively with passengers from the base station and drivers via the mobile radio. Must be able to drive designated senior citizen vans.
