Public Service activities are funded through grants that are given to other agencies or Town departments to carry out eligible community development activities. Funding is open to any nonprofit agency that provides a public service directed toward improving the community. Eligible public service activities include, but are not limited to the following: · Employment · Child Abuse · Drug Abuse · Energy Conservation · Recreational Needs · Crime Prevention · Health · Education · Welfare Notices are published in local newspapers at the beginning of the calendar year and applications are accepted for funding on an annual basis. The Community Development Block Grant Program Year conforms to the Town's Fiscal Year (July 1 to June 30). The Community Development Advisory Commission reviews applications, interviews the applicants, and recommends agency funding to the Mayor and Legislative Council. The public is invited to comment on the merits of these applicants as well. Applicants for 2005-2006 include: Domestic Violence Services of Greater New Haven - Crisis Intervention/Emergency Shelter and Advocacy Services (Request: $10,653.00) Funds can be used to empower victims of domestic violence by providing emotional and practical support and education about resources and available options. Funds can be used to provide new, creative learning experiences for pre-school children between ages 3 and 6. New Haven Legal Assistance - Legal Services For Low-Income Hamden Residents (Request: $10,000.00)
Funds can be used to provide free legal services to low-income residents of Hamden. The Children's Community & Educational Programs - Youth Mentoring Program (Request: $3,000.00)
Funds can be used to recruit, screen, train, supervise and provide activities for mentors and Hamden youth. Hamden Elderly Services - Hamden Elderly Outreach/Telephone Reassurance (Request: $7,970.00)
Funds can be used to fund a Telephone Reassurance worker who receives referrals from the Elderly Outreach Office and makes scheduled telephone calls to homebound residents of the Town. Hamden Elderly Services - Hamden Elderly Outreach/ Energy Aide (Request: $4,050.00)
Funds can be used to fund an Energy Program Aide responsible for assisting in the completion of energy assistance applications filed by elderly residents. Hamden Police - Lunch With The Police (Request: $4,000.00)

Funds can be used to develop and implement two local workshops and provide direct financial assistance to families in which a wage earner has been diagnosed with cancer and is unable to work. Hamden Youth Services - Preschool Childcare Program (Request: $38,500.00)

Funds can be used to support the Hamden Boxing Program, a recreational program for both male and female residents, ages ten to adult. Clelian Center - Alzheimer's Aide (Request: $5,000.00)
Funds can be used to support an Alzheimer's Aide who works directly with frail elders participating in Clelian Adult Day Care Center programs. The Community Development Advisory Commission will interview these applicants in February, 2005 and select grantees.
