Home Depot Spurs Rejuvenation on Dixwell AveGroundbreaking For New Home Depot & Pathmart Plaza Renovation Held July 7
Mayor Amento, Al Gorman, Chris LaTorraca, Anthony Sacchetti Brian Leahy (Home Depot) George Demuth (Centro-Watt) On July 7th Mayor Amento joined representatives from Home Depot and Centro Watt in celebrating the Ground Breaking of the New Home Depot on 1819 Dixwell Ave and the unveiling of the new plan for the renaissance of the Pathmark Plaza. The Home Depot is being built on the site of the former Rickels store and High Standards factory. The plans call for a 122,000 square foot building and have recently been approved by both the Town’s Planning and Zoning Commission and the State of Connecticut Traffic Commission. The project will also include significant improvements at the corner of Benham & Dixwell Avenue. To ease traffic circulation, Benham Street and Dixwell Avenue will both be widened. The total new investment in the site is around $10 million, with about $3 million being invested on remediation of the site in compliance with the State Department of Environmental Protection. The Town of Hamden development staff and the Mayor’s Office played a very active role from early in the development process, and with issues such as the widening of Benham Street and Dixwell Avenue, and the coordination of storm drainage and landscaping plans. “We made a concerted team effort to welcome the developer’s planners and engineers to the Town and help them meet their deadlines for permitting”, stated Dale Kroop the Director of Economic and Community Development. Along with the 150 new jobs the Home Depot is expected to create, Centro-Watt Shopping Center Inc., owners of the Pathmark Plaza next to the new Home Depot, will complete an entire face-lift for the plaza. Along with the facelift, Centro-Watt, will soon announce new tenants for the 77,000 S.F plaza, which will provide additional jobs and economic expansion for the area. “ We are absolutely thrilled to see this project proceed. It will be the most significant commercial project in Hamden in the last 15 years” stated Mayor Carl Amento. Construction is scheduled to begin immediately following the Ground Breaking ceremony. Home Depot is excited about bringing their services to the community and expects to open for business in early 2006, along with new tenants in the Pathmark Plaza.
