Retail Booming on the Magic Mile

Mayor Carl Amento is pleased to announce the continued development of new and expanding retail on the Magic Mile on Dixwell Avenue. The biggest changes will be taking place in the Hamden Plaza. The plaza is going to be home to a new Panera Bread bakery and restaurant, and a Strawberries music and entertainment store. Panera and Strawberries will occupy a new 8,000+ S.F addition to the end of Petco in the Plaza. This new addition to the existing building and the opening of the new stores will be completed in the fall of 2005. Additionally, there are several new tenants in other spaces that already exist in the Plaza.

This project is a Phase II of the expansion of the Plaza, which began last year with the Starbucks, Sprint Phone Store and Models Dry Cleaners. The law offices of Parrett, Porto, Parese and Colwell represented Concordia Realty is the development of local approvals. “ I’m proud to have represented such an important part of the retail community such as the Hamden Plaza” stated Carl Porto, a principle of the firm.

New Stores in Other Places….

At the Hamden plaza more developments, Marshalls will expand into CVS space, Five Guys Burgers at DAVA, Dava moving to the right side, and Joeys Linens and Decorating at the Amazing spot to the right corner. Connix Credit Union will locate next to Dematteos Pizza. Concordia Realty located in Illinois, manages the Hamden Plaza.

Meanwhile, Models Sporting Goods, located in the Staples Plaza that opened only 9 months ago, is already expanding their operations by 5,000 sq. ft. This project should be completed in early 2006. At the Hamden Mart, the Joanne Fabrics store will expand from its 15,000 S.F space to 25,000 S.F. into the space of the former Brooks Store and will be renamed, Joanne Crafts.

Mayor Amento is excited to see an increased interest in the Magic Mile by developers and feels “the opening of these quality retail operations not only improves the attractiveness of Hamden as a commercial center, but they also brings valuable jobs and tax revenue to the Town. These establishments continue what has already been a strong year for commercial development with companies like Home Depot and an international developer like Centro Watt who have chosen to invest in the Pathmark Plaza in Hamden”.
