LA Fitness Approved and Ground Broken For Vacant Skiff Street Site
The residents of Hamden will have a new place to get slim, fit and stay healthy, at 46 Skiff Street at the site of the former (7th Ave) Juvenile Warehouse. A groundbreaking was held on August 18th and the building is targeted for demolition over the next 30 days.
Mayor Carl J. Amento is pleased to announce that a new LA Fitness will open its doors in 2006. This new 43,000 square foot facility will provide a state of the art physical training facility for the Town of Hamden. It will provide a pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, a juice bar, locker rooms, weights/cardiovascular training, and daycare for member’s children.
“We are most pleased to welcome such a high quality development on a site that has been vacant for over 15 years. It shows that the Town is attractive for a major investment by well known developers,” commented Mayor Amento.

LA Fitness is the premier sport/health club operator in the country; there are also branches in West Haven and Stamford Connecticut. Sullivan – Hayes along with Benderson Development Company will be the developer for this project. After completion of this project ownership of the property will be held jointly between Sullivan-Hayes and Benderson, and LA Fitness will be their tenant. “ We are thrilled to have the third LA Fitness in the state opening in Hamden. They are the premier sports/health club in the country and will be a great addition to the Town of Hamden,” remarks Jed Hayes of Sullivan-Hayes developers.
Construction of the building will begin in November 2005 and is expected to be completed in the late summer of 2006.The total projected investment in the project is $ 6.5 million.
