TOWN BREAKS GROUND ON WELTON ST PUMP STATION AND SEWER PROJECT

On October 18, 2004, Mayor Carl J. Amento and several Town officials broke ground on the long awaited Welton St Pump Station and Sewer project.  On hand for the event were Eliot Sheiman for the 6th district of the Legislative Council, State Representative Cam Staples, project managers from the CT. Department of Economic and Community Development and Dale Kroop, Director of Economic and Community Development. “This is a great day for the 6th District because we can solve important capacity problems both for the local businesses and the homeowners while improving the environment,” commented Mr. Sheiman.

The project is funded with a $1.35 million grant to the Town of Hamden for infrastructure improvements along the Welton Street corridor in Hamden. The State funds, which will be matched by the Town, will be used to construct a new pump station, upgrade the sewer system and make necessary road improvements to Welton Street. The project was designed by Weston and Sampson. The contractors are Kovacs and Complete Construction.

The improvements constitute Phase I of the State Street Corridor Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and are necessary to support existing businesses on Welton Street and allow for future commercial development in the area. In addition, the pump station and sewer improvements will benefit homeowners that have been negatively impacted by several sewer-related problems (storm water infiltration, flow constrictions, etc.) and resolve a longstanding Notice of Violation issued by the Department of Environmental Protection in 1999. The firm of Weston and Sampson designed the project for the Town of Hamden.

This project will support those businesses that have already invested heavily in the community, while at the same time create opportunities for new business growth in the future. The improvements that will be made will strengthen Hamden’s overall tax base and greatly enhance the quality of life for those residents that live in the Welton Street area. We are grateful to the State of Connecticut for providing these funds for the Welton Street neighborhood, and look forward to continuing our partnership with them to create jobs, boost local tax revenues and to improve the quality of life for Hamden residents,” stated Mayor Amento.
