Mayor Carl J. Amento Helps to Celebrate the Grand Opening of Bashta's Martial Arts Center at 1349 Dixwell Avenue.

Mayor Carl J. Amento and the Bashta Family Owners

Bashta's Martial Arts was started from a seed that Director of Parks and Recreation Laura Luzzi planted. She inquired about someone teaching a Park/Rec Tae Kwon Do program. John Bashta Jr. was selected to teach the first season. He was 14 at the time and a first degree black belt. Because of this, John Sr. went and helped his son further the students' learning.

The first session turned into many sessions, with very dedicated students and because of this dedication, the Bashta's decided to add another day onto their curriculum. Among other additions was the inclusion of summer sessions. This would be a blessing as people began to view the program as their school rather than an introductory session. They soon after started renting the Dunbar Hill Volunteer Fire Department hall, but began to outgrow the location and needed to find a permanent location to secure a future in the Martial Arts Community. After searching high and low for a location that suited the interests of everyone, we stumbled upon a phenomenal find in the sense of an ideal location on 1349 Dixwell Avenue.

The location was then renovated for the sole purpose of a Martial Arts School. Bashta's Martial Arts opened the doors to our permanent location on August 1st, 2005. Bashta's Martial Arts is now open 6 days a week and offers classes for men, women, and children in the art of Tae Kwon Do infused with other arts such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Small Circle JuJutsu, Muy Thai Kickboxing, Tang Soo Do, etc. The reason for blending these styles is to offer a more well rounded training, not leaving any aspect untouched. We also offer Cardio Kickboxing, Tiny Tots, and A.W.A.R.E (rape prevention) classes.

All of the training curriculum is taught by John Jr., and John Sr., along with the help of family friends and fellow black belts Scott Hamilton, and Gary Nevola. Without their loyalty and encouragement Bashta‘s Martial Arts may have never come to fruition. The Cardio Kickboxing class is taught by Michelle Coppola. We at Bashta's Martial Arts strive to instill the worldly values such as Respect, Discipline, Self Control, and Goal-Setting Determination.
