HOME DEPOT OPENS ON DIXWELL AVENUE

On January 26^th Mayor Henrici joined representatives from Home Depot, the Hamden Chamber of Commerce and the Hamden Economic Development Commission to celebrate the opening of the new Home Depot on 1819 Dixwell Ave. To the delight of those in attendance, Mayor Henrici welcomed the store by cutting a Home Depot sign with a saw. Along with the numerous home improvement products, the 122,000 square foot store includes a large garden center, appliance center and large contractor area.

The project also includes significant improvements at the corner of Benham & Dixwell Avenue. To ease traffic circulation, Benham Street and Dixwell Avenue were both widened. The total new investment in the site is around $10 million, with about $3 million that was invested on remediation of the site in compliance with the State Department of Environmental Protection.

Along with the 150 new jobs the Home Depot is expected to create, Centro-Watt Shopping Center Inc., owners of the Pathmark Plaza next to the new Home Depot, is currently completing an entire face-lift for the plaza. Along with the facelift, Centro-Watt, will soon announce new tenants for the 77,000 S.F plaza, which will provide additional jobs and economic expansion for the area. Those tenants are anticipated to occupy the space during the spring and summer of 2006.

As part of the ceremony, Home Depot donated a check to the Community Services Program for energy conservation measures for low-income residents. The funding can be used for weatherization improvements. “We are grateful that Home Depot has donated these funds to help Hamden residents that are unable to keep up with high energy costs”.
