Godly Treats Opens on Dixwell Avenue
The Town of Hamden was pleased to add a bright new rising star to the community this past December as Godly Treat's, an all natural bakery, opened at 1531 Dixwell Ave.
Godly Treat's is open Monday through Saturday from 6am to 7 pm. Their phone number is 203-287-9011.
While you are sure to find a wide variety of delicious, healthy treats, the mission of the bakery is as unique and refreshing as the food it serves. Operating entirely with a staff of volunteers, Godly Treats is not a business as much as it is a classroom established by the United Nation of Islam. The U.N.O.I., which is a different entity than the Nation of Islam, has built a strong record of having a tremendously positive effect on the communities it enters across the nation.
In classroom/eateries such as Your Diner, in Kansas City, Kansas, or Food for Life in Maryland, participants, young and old, have the opportunity to practice what they are learning about eating to live, and doing right, invariably with mouth-watering results.
The adage that volunteers make the best workers rings true as the pleasant, helpful cashiers offer piping hot samples of goodies ranging from Chocolate Cream Cheese Brownies to light delicious freshly baked Solomon's Spelt Bread. Prostell X tirelessly describes the various baked goods and the preparation that goes into them with an enthusiasm that implies he is talking about a great deal more than cookies and cake.
He explains his exuberance, "Because we are doing this entirely for the purpose of giving everyone the opportunity to experience right, I don’t have anything else in my mind, other than making sure my customer has the best experience they can have. It's not about making money or getting a check at the end of the week, but about doing something positive for the customer and the community!"
That spirit comes across from the moment you set foot in the bakery and continues well into your first taste of fresh navy bean pie. Fatima Jenkins, bears witness to that statement, "Godly Treats bakery has provided me a prime opportunity to be creative beyond set standards. Versus going to a school those only deals with textbook ideas, this allows you to pursue an idea timelessly in an enjoyable setting. Allowing the idea to be complete." Prostell agrees as he hands out more samples of the pie, "What we are doing here is a win-win situation because we get the opportunity to do something very few people in this world ever do. That is doing right for the right reason with no strings attached. And then community is able to come see first hand the benefits of doing and supporting what we do." Scanning the satisfied taste buds in front of him, Prostell flashes a satisfied smile, "I couldn't think of a sweeter proposition."
