The 1200 foot long tunnel on Route 15 (Wilbur Cross Parkway) which helps connect Hartford and New York and acts as an alternate route to Interstates 95 and 91 is scheduled to undergo major repairs. The project will begin in the vicinity of Exit 59 in New Haven, extending northerly through the Heroes Tunnel and ends approximately 1,000 feet north of the Wintergreen Avenue overpass in Hamden.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Town of Hamden conducted a public informational meeting on October 18, 2017. The consultant for the Connecticut Department of Transportation has begun the preliminary design phase of the project. There will be some testing of the tunnel and area around the tunnel over the next few months. The current phase of testing is on the type of rock in the area. The testing will consist of boring and testing the rock without disturbing the existing tunnel.
