Li Liu, Traditions of Chinese Acrobats

Hamden – The Hamden Arts Commission in collaboration with Hamden’s Department of Arts, Culture, Recreation and Wellness is proud to present Li Liu’s performance of Traditions of Chinese Acrobatics as the fifth event in the Saturday Family Entertainment Series. Start your day early at the Miller Memorial Library where Take Your Child to the Library Day activities begin at 10am and then come by to see Li Liu’s amazing performance of Traditions of Chinese Acrobatics at 1pm in Thornton Wilder Hall!

Li Liu was born in the city of Shenyang in The Northeast of China. At the age of six she began her acrobatic training, and the following year she was chosen to attend The Chinese National Circus School in the capitol city of Beijing. While in Beijing she trained for eight hours a day until she was 16.

In 1984 Li Liu’s artistic cycling act won a gold medal at the prestigious Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris, France. She often teamed with her sister Liu Ying to create duo acts that were conceived by her coach and father Liu Gui Ting. In 1995 their duo hand balancing act was selected to perform at The Wu Qiao International Circus Festival where they were awarded “The Golden Lion” prize.

For many years Li Liu traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia with The Liaoning Acrobatic Arts Troupe. She performed with Zirkus Knie in Switzerland, Circus Krone in Germany and with countless other touring shows in Italy, Holland, France, South Africa, Singapore, Japan, and Indonesia.

Li Liu came to the United States in 2000 with Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus and toured all over the US for two years. She has been living in the US and working as a freelance performer since 2003. She is a regular on the NBA & WNBA half-time circuits and is also a featured performer on Princess Cruise Lines. In September of 2010, Li Liu appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Traditions of Chinese Acrobatics is a solo acrobatic performance. Li Liu performs hand balancing, plate spinning, artistic cycling, ribbon dancing, Chinese yo-yos, and foot juggling. Some children will be able to join her on stage to create an impromptu ribbon dance and also to try plate spinning.  Li Liu shares Chinese language and culture, explaining some rituals of Chinese New Year and teaching the audience some basic Chinese phrases.  She helps them imagine what it might have been like to grow up in a different time and place.

All performances in this Saturday Family Entertainment Series are from 1PM to 2PM and will take place at Thornton Wilder Hall in the Miller Cultural Complex, 2901 Dixwell Ave where there is ample free parking. Tickets will be available at the door only, and are $3 for adults and $2 for children, cash only.
