The Town of Hamden is continuing our snow removal from the storm of February 1, 2021. Having received more than a foot of snow in most places in Town, removal of the snow from roads, driveways and sidewalks is no small task.
We are reminding all property owners that §96.26 of the Town of Hamden’s Ordinance for Snow and Ice Removal, requires that snow and ice be removed from sidewalks by the person responsible for the premises within twenty-four (24) hours after the cessation of any precipitation. Please ensure that the sidewalk is safe and wide enough for pedestrian travel, especially for our residents that may have mobility challenges.
The Town typically determines the 24 hour period to start when the snow stops falling in the Town, which was the early morning hours of February 2, 2021. Because we received over a foot of snow, we are extending the time period for this storm to 48 hours.
Due to the depth of the snow, we will begin sidewalk snow inspections on Thursday February 4, 2021. Inspections start on sidewalks in high traffic areas, such as school zones and very busy business areas which have a great deal of pedestrian traffic or locations which are reported that a violation of the Snow and Ice Removal Ordinance has occurred. While it is very difficult to inspect every sidewalk, the ordinance applies to all public sidewalks throughout Town.
Please be further advised that in the unfortunate event that a property owner fails to do so, under the terms of §96.29 of the Snow and Ice Removal Ordinance, the owner may be issued a citation and be subject to a fine of up to one hundred dollars ($100.00) per day.
To report a location, please register the location via our online work order system at www.seeclickfix.com or call the Engineering Department. If you have any questions concerning this policy or the letter that may be received, please call the Engineering Department at (203) 287-7040.
Thank you for your cooperation.
