Hamden Earth Day Trail Cleanup & Composter Unit Pickup
April 24th, 2021
Every year the town of Hamden celebrates Earth Day. Unfortunately, last April the Town had to cancel the annual Earth Day event at the last minute due to the pandemic. Likewise, this year while we are not going to have the typical Earth Day event that includes gathering thousands of residents for activities at the middle school, we are offering some other special Earth Day activities for 2021!
Mayor Leng encourages residents to re-engage with our environment this Earth Day season, commenting, "I'd like to thank Hamden PW & Parks Director Craig Cesare and Recycling Coordinator Joe DeRisi for putting together these events and programs. We must remain actively engaged with cleaning up our Town, while protecting our community and our resources and preserving our environment for the future. I hope residents will enjoy the home composting program, offered through our partner SCRCOG. My family and I will be purchasing one and trying to do our part to be more green and to save the Town some “green”. I hope we have a wonderful turnout for our scheduled trail cleanup day and thank everyone in advance who will be participating! With more folks getting outdoors - and while keeping our distances too - it’s more important than ever to keep our hometown clean and green!"
Home Composters
Right now we are taking orders for home composters. Through a program offered by The South Central Council of Governments, Hamden is able to offer 80 gallon composters for a reduced price. To order your composter unit in time for Earth Day, visit this website: https://scrcogcompostersale.company.site/ Composters will be available for pickup at Hamden Middle School on April 24th from 1-3 PM. You can order through April 21st.
Trail Cleanup Adjacent to the Middle School
Also on April 24th, at the middle school, we will have a cleanup of the adjacent trails and bike path near Shepard Brook. Volunteers will be bagging up trash and Public Works will remove them for disposal. This is a good outside earth day activity where we can easily social distance while making a positive impact on our local environments and the community as a whole.
Meet at 11:00 at the rear middle school parking lot next to the tennis courts. Call the Recycling Coordinator to sign up if you want to participate and to get detailed instructions.
You must be on the list ahead of time to volunteer. Call the Recycling Coordinator, Joe DeRisi, at 203-287-7021, or e-mail at jderisi@hamden.com
