[ARCHIVED] Hamden Hosts 2022 USA Underwater Rugby National Championship

Hamden Hosts 2022 USA Underwater Rugby National Championship

Hamden – The Hamden High School Swimming Pool (2040 Dixwell Ave) is hosting the 2022 USA Underwater Rugby National Championship September 9th – 11th, 2022. Click here for the link to the schedule.

Please see the below information provided by Laura Bedoya, Assistant Coach of The CT Makos Underwater Rugby Team:

“Underwater Rugby is arguably the most fascinating sport in the world. In a three dimensional arena, two teams fight for the win by passing, and swimming, up to 15 feet under the surface, while holding their breath. Each team tries to score by putting the ball into the opposing team’s basket- shaped goal that is anchored on the bottom of the pool (10.5 to 15 feet deep). To do this and always keep the ball underwater, the teams engage in many tactical and strategic maneuvers.

The CT Makos focuses on building a community that is passionate about underwater rugby and athletic youth engagement. Our team is under the Underwater Society of America (USOA) which is a 501(c) (3) non-profit, tax-exempt charitable corporation. We are the youngest and fastest- growing team in the country with approximately thirty players. We have been 3x consecutive National Champions in the USA Underwater Rugby Women’s League for 2018, 2019, 2020, and Top 8 in the Champions Cup league in Berlin, Germany representing the United States. Also, for the 2019 CMAS World Championships, we had had the greatest number of players represent Team USA on the Women’s National Team. In 2021, our Coach Jose Bedoya was selected to be USA Underwater Rugby Women’s National Team Coach for the 2023 CMAS World Championships.

For the 2022 USA Underwater Rugby National Championship we will have athletes traveling from California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. There will be eight teams in the open league, and six team in the women league for a total of 14 teams. This will be weekend filled with adrenaline and high levels of competition that we plan to live stream to our YouTube channel.

The team is enthusiastic about defending our national ranking. We appreciate your contribution to helping us continue our mission of building a community that is passionate about underwater rugby and engaging the local community to a fast-growing sport.
