  66. The Social Act of Reading

    March 21, 2024, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
    @
1st Floor Program Room, Miller Memorial Library

Humans are wired for stories, whether spoken or written. Not so long ago, communities came together to listen to a book read aloud. This connected people with a shared narrative. Hamden Public Library is bringing back the social aspect of reading. Gather with us to share your voice, or just listen to others, as we read some of the best short stories of our time. Our second social reading club meets at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 21 at the Miller Memorial library, 2901 Dixwell Avenue. Come read or listen to a short story chosen by the social reading club’s second meeting participants and Hamden Public Library staff. The reading begins with a library staff member kicking off the story, then the book will be passed from person to person to be read until the story is completed. Participants can choose to not read aloud, simply by passing the book along to the next reader. This is a space where listening is the focus. Participants are welcome to linger after the reading to talk with each other about their thoughts and the story. There will not be a formal book discussion with prompts, analysis, and moderated conversations. This is a chance to connect socially through listening and reading. Please contact Dave Scanlon at 203-287-2680 or email dscanlon@hamdenlibrary.org if you have any questions. **Thank you to musician, scholar, and archivist Alex Waterman for the title of this program

An NPR Best Book of 2021, The Personal Librarian is a fictional account of the remarkable life of Belle da Costa Greene, the first director of New York’s Morgan Library and Museum. Hired by J.P. Morgan to help curate a world-class library collection, Belle rises to the top of society with her elegance, wit, and determination to thrive in her chosen career. However, Belle’s triumphs and work ethic are both connected to a personal, long-buried secret; the lengths that she will go to keep it hidden will reverberate through time and shape her identity and legacy in profound ways. Praise for The Personal Librarian includes the following from Library Journal: “[The Personal Librarian is] an excellent piece of historical fiction that many readers will find hard to put down.”
